In a game that lived up to all the hype, Local 442 was able to defend the E Division Championship by defeating Friendship BC 16 to 15 in 8 innings. In this rematch of last year's championship series, Friendship BC jumped out to an early 6 run lead, but the Local 442 defense tightened and allowed the offense to score 8 unanswered runs. It then became a game of wills as pitchers Barry Tapley (FBC) and Bill Bernabucci (442) continued to grind away at batters.
With Local 442 leading by 4 in the top of the 7th, Friendship BC scored 4 times to send it to the bottom of the frame. Local 442 got two men aboard, but Tapley was able to escape the inning. Friendship score 3 runs in the top of the 8th, but the Local 442 bats weren't done yet. Rookies Lou Gonzalez and Matt Southard lead the hit parade and with the winning run on third Rookie Brett Johnson singled to left to seal the victory and bring home the championship.
It was a great year for both teams who will be moving up to 'D' next year. I speak for all on Local 442 when I tip my cap to Friendship BC, a great group of competitors.
